As of Tuesday the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has yet to announce its chief ministerial candidate for Delhi following their victory in the recent assembly elections. The decision is expected to be made during a BJP legislature party meeting scheduled for February 19. The swearing-in ceremony for the new chief minister is planned for February 20 at Ramlila Maidan.
Several names have emerged as potential candidates for the chief minister's position. Parvesh Verma, who defeated Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, is a prominent contender. Other possible candidates include former Delhi BJP presidents Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay.
The AAP has criticized the BJP for the delay in announcing the chief ministerial candidate. Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi stated, "It has become clear that the BJP doesn't have a CM candidate. It has also become clear that PM Modi has no faith in 48 elected MLAs."
The BJP's victory in Delhi marks a significant shift, ending the AAP's decade-long rule. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats in the assembly, while the AAP won 22 seats.
