ABVP against merging Kodagu varsity with UoM
Madikeri: Condemning the proposal to merge Kodagu University with the University of Mysore, the student wing of BJP Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), held a protest at General Thimayya circle in Madikeri on Tuesday.
Hundreds of students from various colleges in the city gathered and raised slogans against the govt. The students said, Kodagu University should not be closed for any reason and urged the govt to provide appropriate funds and strengthen the university.
ABVP's divisional organising secretary, Chandrashekhar Marati said it is a matter of pride that Kodagu University, with its headquarters in Madikeri, is serving the students. "Earlier, when there was an academic problem, we had to travel 5-6 hours to distant towns. Creation of Kodagu University created favourable situation for students. It is condemnable that the state govt is not providing funds for management of universities because there is no money in the treasury," he stated. This is an anti-student policy. It is a pity that the govt, which is providing funds for other facilities, is not providing funds for maintenance of the university, he contended.
Manoj, a student, said the govt's stance will cause problems for the student community. "This will have an adverse effect on the students' future. The govt should create an environment conducive to learning by overcoming the shortage of lecturers." He criticised the govt for not providing funds and playing with the future of the students.
