Criticising the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and the Sivachariyars for asking two non-Brahmin priests to keep away from the Kudamuzhukku (consecration) ceremony of Vayalur Murugan Temple in Tiruchi, advocate Vanchinathan said it amounted to untouchability.
Addressing a press meet in Madurai on Tuesday, Mr. Vanchinathan said the two non-Brahmin priests — Prabhu and Jayabal — were appointed by the Tamil Nadu government at Vayalur Murugan Temple. They were asked not to participate in the consecration ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, and particularly not to come near the Yagasala by the Sivachariyars and the HR&CE officials. This was clearly against the Constitution, and HR&CE Minister P.K. Sekar Babu should respond, he said.
Both Mr. Prabhu and Mr. Jayabal had written to the Chief Minister about the discrimination, stating that they were permitted to perform the pujas at Vinayagar sannidhi and Navagraha sannidhi and not inside the sanctum sanctorum, he said.
