Islamabad: Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, began his two-day visit to India on Monday. Sheikh Tamim was received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Qatari Emir and PM Modi were seen embracing each other. Pakistani political commentator Qamar Cheema has spoken on this development. He stated that the improving relations between Qatar and India are highly significant. He also discussed Pakistan’s declining importance in the Arab world.
Qamar Cheema said, “Prime Minister Modi personally welcoming Qatar’s Emir Al-Thani at the airport is symbolically significant. Last year, Qatar pardoned nine Indian Navy officers who had been sentenced to death. India and Modi had expressed deep gratitude to Qatar for this. It seems that by giving a special welcome to the Qatari Emir, India is also trying to reciprocate last year’s favor.”
Qamar Cheema stated that Qatar holds significant global importance, largely due to its close ties with the United States. India maintains strong relations with Arab nations that are aligned with the U.S., with Qatar and the UAE being particularly crucial. Qatar recently played a key role in efforts to halt the war in Gaza, showcasing its global influence.
Cheema further added that as Qatar expands its global influence, India offers a vast market and labor force. This makes India important for Qatar, while India also needs Qatar. Naturally, this is bringing both nations closer. Qatar possesses large reserves of gas and oil, while India has a growing energy demand, strengthening their ties even further.
Cheema said that India has strategically expanded its presence in the Arab world, causing Pakistan to fall behind rapidly in the region. Even Pakistan’s allies in the Muslim world are shifting towards India. In such a scenario, Pakistan will have to work hard to re-establish itself and rethink its strategy.
