Hunger strike by electricity workers tomorrow

Published - February 17, 2025 10:45 pm IST - PUDUCHERRY

The joint action committee (JAC) of electricity department engineers and workers led by the Puducherry Electrical Engineers and Employees Welfare Association will go on hunger strike on Wednesday to protest against the delay in filling a large number of vacancies, and to highlight other grievances.

Workers from across regions of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam, are expected to participate in the protest scheduled at the head office in the city.

The JAC said in a statement that the protest was necessitated by the department’s failure to address several workers’ grievances that was degrading the efficiency of the power sector. One of the main demands is to undertake measures to fill over 1,000 vacant posts as the resultant shortage of hands was overburdening existing staff and affecting service to consumers.

The JAC has also demanded that the ad hoc posts of engineers and workers working in the department should be regularised and the benefits of the Central Pay Commission be immediately passed on to employees.
