Muscat: Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba has dealt a major blow to China. Deuba stated that Nepal is not taking any loans under the Belt and Road Project, which has become a debt trap for China. Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping had pressurised Nepalese PM KP Sharma Oli during his visit to Beijing to approve various projects by taking loans under the BRI.

The Nepali Foreign Minister has praised relations with India but has also expressed her pain regarding New Delhi’s stance. Deuba mentioned that there is a special focus on hydro power projects with India. However, she noted that it has been more than six months since the Oli government came to power, yet India has not even extended an invitation for her to visit New Delhi.

It has been 3 months since KP Oli went to China but he has not yet been invited by India. The Nepalese Foreign Minister held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Oman’s Muscat city.

In a conversation with the WION channel, the Nepali Foreign Minister said about relations with India, “We have always been able to have meaningful talks. We have talked to each other and resolved various issues and relations are going in a good direction. It would be a matter of great happiness if PM Oli is invited to India.”

Analysts say that India is not inviting Oli due to pro-China policies and unnecessary anti-India rhetoric.

Nepal clarifies stand on BRI

Regarding the BRI agreement with China, Deuba said, “BRI is merely a memorandum of understanding for development work between Nepal and China. I would like to clarify that Nepal is very clear that it is not in a position to take very expensive loans from any country or institution. The Chinese government is very clear about this.”

It is worth mentioning that an agreement was signed between China and Nepal during Oli’s visit in December 2024. Regarding the meeting with the Indian Foreign Minister, she said that we had a very good conversation and discussed various issues.

In response to a question regarding any disputed issue between India and Nepal, Deuba said that we have always had a good relationship with India. We have developed a deep understanding of each other. Therefore, I do not think there is any issue. Regarding the BRI, the Nepali Foreign Minister stated that the BRI should not be viewed as a strategic alliance between Nepal and China. Nepal is a non-aligned country and does not form strategic alliances with any country in the world.
