Indore (Madhya Pradesh): While leading the state in digital transactions, electricity consumers in Indore save a substantial amount through cashless payment of their electricity bills. The city, which is home to around 5.25 lakh electricity consumers, pays power bills through mobile phones, with a monthly savings of around Rs 40 lakh. This amounts to an impressive Rs 5 crore in savings every year.

More and more residents have been capitalising on the opportunity to receive cashback for making cashless payments. These incentives range from Rs 5 to Rs 1,000 per bill depending on the consumer’s category, including non-domestic, domestic and high-tension consumers.

The Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission offers these discounts, which are reflected in the following month's bills. Indore stands out in comparison to other cities in the Malwa-Nimar region, where about 67 per cent of consumers, around 15.50 lakh in total, opt for cashless bill payments. Indore has gained attention for its efficient promotion of cashless methods with awareness campaigns through messages on electricity bills, portals, social media and advertisements in local newspapers.

Alongside Indore, other cities such as Ujjain, Ratlam, Dewas, Khandwa and Khargone have also seen increasing adoption of cellphone-based electricity bill payments. In villages, around 200 to 1,500 consumers are adopting cashless payments each month. Madhya Pradesh West Zone Electricity Distribution Company continues to encourage cashless transactions, which are not only convenient but have led to a major decrease in transaction costs. On average, the company offers a total cashless discount of Rs 1.25 crore each month across its consumer base.
