Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam has complained about the inordinate delay by officials of Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation in disbursal of due to farmers who had sold their paddy at the Direct Purchase Centres in Virudhunagar district.
“TNCSC has to make the payment to the farmers within five days from the day of procuring the paddy. However, now it is more than 20 days since the farmers gave their produce to DPCs and the payment has not been made yet,” the association district president N.A. Ramachandra Raja said.
In a petition addressed to Collector, Mr. Ramachandra Raja said that opening of DPCs in Virudhunagar district had saved the farmers from the lower price at which private players were trying to buy the paddy.
The farmers had to pledge their jewelries, take loans and face several other hardships in raising the crops.
“Since the payment for the paddy sold at the DPCs had not been made yet, the farmers were not able to repay their loans and were not able to get fresh loans for the next season of cultivation,” he said.
He also complained that the paddy procured by the farmers was left in the open and not taken to the godown for safeguarding it from the adverse impact of rain.
He pointed out that under the Food Safety Act, the food grains should be immediately taken to the godowns.
