Robber arrested after police encounter

Varanasi: A dreaded robber was arrested after suffering a bullet injury in the leg during an encounter with police in the Singhpur area under Sarnath police station on Friday late night.
Assistant commissioner of police, Sarnath Atul Anjan Tripathi on Saturday said that the arrested criminal was identified as Vishal Bharti of Azamgarh, who they were searching due to his involvement in 12 cases lodged with different police stations. Police recovered an illegal arm and motorcycle from him.
The ACP further said that under the ongoing Operation Chakravyuha to put a complete check on criminals' movements, the cops of Sarnath police station were busy in a checking drive near Singhpur when they noticed a motorcycle-borne person and signalled him to stop. However, instead of following the police instruction, he opened fire on the police team and tried to escape.
The cops also opened fire in self-defence, the ACP said, and Bharti was shot in the leg and fell on the spot.
He was then arrested and rushed to the hospital. Bharti was hiding in Benipur following the commission of some loot incidents.
