With the rise in cases of sexual harassment and abuse of children in schools, the Confederation of Arunodhaya Children Sangam has urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to set up CCTV cameras in schools.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, the confederation said, “There is a lack of security in school for children. The teachers who are supposed to protect the children are ruining the children and we have no confidence in the teachers. In districts like Krishnagiri, Manaparai, Villupuram they are aware of the sexual harassment of children by teachers.”

The children urged the government to sensitise children, parents and teachers about sex education and safe touch, set up surveillance cameras in classrooms and public places. “A child protection committee should be established in all schools to ensure the safety of children. The committee should submit a report to the School Education Department about the safety of children every three months,” the letter stated.

They further demanded that children should be included as members of the School Management Committee and their views should be taken and that government order 121 should be implemented strictly. All schools should have a child protection policy which should be signed by the teachers. Further, school counselors should be appointed immediately, the federation demanded.
