Bhubaneswar: In the last 10 years, 34,471 students graduated from govt engineering colleges and universities in Odisha, but only 15,279 were employed during the period, skill development and technical education minister Sampad Chandra Swain informed the assembly on Friday.
In a written reply, the minister further said, "A single window clearance system has been opened for the establishment of industries in Odisha. There is a condition for industries to follow the govt's policy to recruit local people."
According to data presented by the minister, in the last decade, 19,182 engineering graduates from govt institutes are unemployed in the state. Out of 54,189 students who completed their engineering diplomas in the last decade, 20,096 found employment, according to data. As many as 34,051 engineering diploma holders are unemployed in the state in the last 10 years.
Academics said that not all engineering streams are attracting campus placements. "Around 40% of the engineering seats are lying vacant in private engineering colleges. Students are not showing interest in studying some core subjects, except computer science. Students always prefer govt engineering colleges. If govt engineering colleges perform poorly in placements, what can we expect from other institutes?" asked academic Siba Prasad Adhikary.
