Jaipur: A 35-year-old engineer from Karnataka narrowly escaped death after an alert Metro operator applied emergency brakes to stop the train moments before the man attempted to jump in front of it at platform No. 2 of the Railway metro station Tuesday.
The incident was captured on CCTV and police arrested the man identified as Yashwanth, a resident of Tumkur in Karnataka, who works at a company in Bangalore.
Metro SHO Poonam Kumari said that the incident happened around 2pm Tuesday when the Metro operator Mukesh Kumar Yadav spotted the man sprinting toward the tracks as the train approached from the Sindhi Camp side.
Yadav immediately applied the emergency brakes, bringing the train to a halt just metres away from the man. The duty station controller swiftly rescued Yashwanth from the tracks and handed him over to the Metro police station, she said.
During interrogation, Yashwanth revealed that strained family relations drove him to attempt to end his life, Kumari said. "The family claimed that he often took some intoxicating substances regularly."
Police said that the man claimed he no longer wanted to live with his family. After telling his parents he was travelling to Maha Kumbh, he instead flew to Jaipur, where he tried to jump before the train.
A case was registered under various sections of the Metro Railways Act for endangering passenger safety and obstructing operations, based on a complaint by Metro station superintendent Suresh Chand Vyas.
Police are investigating whether the accused's substance abuse exacerbated his mental state. "The case is under investigation. A team was also sent to the Metro station to retrieve CCTVs and also examine the platform where the incident took place. We have also informed the man's family in Karnataka about the incident," said an official, adding that the preliminary probe revealed that the man may have consumed some substance before he tried to jump.
