Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, has launched its Starlink satellite internet service in Bhutan. Musk shared this update through a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirming the availability of Starlink in the country. However, while he made the announcement this week, Starlink had actually been officially introduced in Bhutan back in December last year.

Starlink operates through a vast network of thousands of small satellites orbiting about 550 kilometers above Earth in low-Earth orbit (LEO). These satellites communicate with each other and with ground stations using laser links, enabling fast and reliable data transmission.

Musk’s post on X was short and to the point: “Starlink is now available in Bhutan!” Though the official announcement was made just recently, the service had already been active in the country since last December.

Starlink, managed by SpaceX, aims to provide high-speed internet connectivity to even the most remote and inaccessible regions of the world. The technology works by linking a network of satellites in LEO to ground terminals, which then transmit internet signals to users’ devices.

Bhutan, a mountainous nation, faces challenges in setting up traditional internet infrastructure. In such a scenario, Starlink offers a promising alternative for its citizens. However, since the technology is still in its early stages, it remains quite expensive due to high operational costs.

Starlink plans in Bhutan

Starlink is offering different internet plans in Bhutan to cater to various needs:

Compared to India, these plans are quite expensive. In India, broadband plans priced between Rs. 400 to Rs. 1,000 per month often provide speeds between 100 to 200 Mbps with unlimited data. However, satellite internet services like Starlink are particularly useful for remote areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is unavailable or unreliable.
