For chem-free veggies, Thane to get organic farm

Thane: In a first-of-its-kind initiative for an urban local govt body, the Thane Municipal Corporation will set up an organic farm in the city and encourage all school students to plant and adopt a tree in their vicinity as part of mission ‘Green Thane' initiative, deputy CM Eknath Shinde announced Friday.
Shinde made the announcement after flagging off the three-day 14th Vrikshavalli green exhibition by the TMC. "There is a need to encourage organic farming considering the ill effects of chemical-laden fruits and vegetables. The climate of Thane is conducive, and soil fertile," he said sharing his experience of cultivating vegetables in his bungalow garden at Louiswadi area. tnn
