‘5,332 HIV-related deaths in Mizoram since Oct ’90’
Aizawl: At least 5,332 people have died in Mizoram due to HIV infections since Oct 1990 when the first HIV case was detected while the total number of HIV infected people till 2023-2024 is 31,676, according to Mizoram state AIDS control society (MSACS) officials on Thursday.
The officials gave the report at an event on the International Condom Day, jointly organised by the MSACS, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) India Cares and Samaritan Society of Mizoram (SSM), in Aizawl.
According to the report, 29,123 positives are identified as general clients while 2,553 people are identified in pregnant women or antenatal care profile tests. Those who had died due to HIV infections comprise of 3,523 males, 1,722 females and 87 children, the report said.
MSACS project director Jane R Ralte, while launching ‘Generation C Programme' at the event, said 1,669 new HIV positive cases have been detected in the state during the past 10 months of which 1,015 got infected through unsafe sex that is 60.81%.
"Encouraging the use of condom is not encouraging sex, but to ensure safe sex," Ralte said.
