The newly launched streaming platform, JioHotstar, formed after the merger of Viacom18’s JioCinema and Star India’s Disney+ Hotstar into JioHotstar, will not offer free streaming of IPL matches.

JioHotstar, which serves over 50 crore users with entertainment and live sports, has introduced a hybrid subscription model, limiting free access for cricket fans across India.

According to a Reuters report, fans can watch only a few minutes of an IPL match for free. Once the free limit is reached, they will be directed to a subscription page, with plans starting at ₹149.

Previously, JioCinema streamed IPL matches for free after securing rights for five years from 2023 for $3 billion. However, starting in 2025, viewers will need a paid subscription to watch full matches.

This shift comes after Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance and Walt Disney merged their India media assets in an $8.5 billion deal last year.

Subscription model for JioHotstar

JioHotstar offers two subscription plans a basic plan for ₹149 and an Ad-Free Version for ₹499 for three months. The platform is home to major cricket tournaments, including ICC events, IPL, and WPL, while also supporting grassroots cricket with the Indian Street Premier League and various events organized by BCCI, ICC, and state associations.

Beyond cricket, JioHotstar provides access to global sporting events like the Premier League and Wimbledon, along with top Indian leagues such as Pro Kabaddi and ISL, making it a comprehensive destination for sports fans.
