Guwahati: Kamrup Metro authorities have issued an order to mitigate the menace of open and hanging wires on the street poles.
Sub-divisional magistrate of Kamrup Metro, Kankan Sharma, had issued the order under section 152 (1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, directing the concerned agencies to properly secure, manage and dress the wires within seven days.
The development came after a field verification unearthed that the open wires were posing a physical discomfort and nuisance to the public. The order mentioned that failure to comply with the order may result in penalties under section 223 of BNSS, 2023, and enforcement actions, including removal of the nuisance by law enforcement authorities.
"We have seen people facing many difficulties. It causes a lot of accidents. We have heard of cases of cable workers involved in accidents, so we have taken this decision to address the issue of wires in the streets. We have given a deadline of seven days, so the pole-owning authority will be advised to take suo moto cause of action if not following the order", Sharma told TOI.
Agencies responsible for the wires have been directed to take immediate action, with the pole-owning authorities instructed to mitigate the nuisance at the cost of cable owners, if necessary. The order also invites objections from concerned parties, which can be submitted on Friday at 4pm to the district commissioner.
"As we have given a schedule for the objection and based on the nature of the objections, we will take the further course of action". Sharma added.
