Four people were given a new lease of life when the family of a person who was declared brain-dead came forward to donate his organs.
R. Rajesh, a native of Varkala and a school teacher at Amritha HSS, Parippally, had been admitted to a private hospital following cerebral haemorrhage on February 8. Brain death was confirmed by doctors on February 13, following which the family, consisting of his wife, Sangeetha, and two children, gave their consent for his organs to be donated.
The viable organs, both kidneys and cornea, were donated to four persons under treatment in different hospitals. The kidneys were donated to two patients with end-stage renal failure and undergoing treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital and at KIMSHEALTH. The corneas were harvested by the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology.
The organ donation process, including organ harvesting and finding suitable donors, was coordinated by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, the apex body overseeing deceased donor organ donation in the State.
The funeral of Rajesh is expected to be held on Saturday at Varkala.
