Kanpur: An auto lifter was injured and arrested following an encounter with the police in Gujaini area of the city late on Wednesday night.
According to the police, information was received about a notorious auto lifter from Hardoi being in the Gujaini area.
Following the tip-off, the police started a checking drive. During this, the criminal opened fire on the police party upon seeing them. In retaliation, the police shot the criminal in the leg. The injured criminal was taken into custody and transported to the hospital, where senior officers began questioning him. The police identified the accused as Saurabh Rathore, a resident of Deen Nagar village, Kachauna police station, Hardoi.
According to ADCP South Mahesh Kumar, the accused had recently stolen a car from the city and returned to commit another crime. One Arimardan Singh's Eco car, a resident of Veerankheda Gazipur in Saadh, was stolen from Tatya Tope Nagar in the Gujaini police station area recently. The victim had filed a report against an unknown person.
Under Operation Trinetra, the accused was identified with the help of CCTV footage. It came to light that the notorious criminal was active in the area again, leading to the initiation of a checking drive. An encounter ensued between the Gujaini police and the criminal. The police said that the accused has 15 serious cases registered against him in Hardoi, Kalyanpur, Bilhaur, Naubasta, and Barra, among other places. Further investigation is underway.
