ABVP seeks SPPU action on exam & policy issues
Pune: Close to 300 students aligning with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest at Savitribai Phule Pune University's (SPPU) main gate on Thursday afternoon. The agitators also met vice-chancellor Suresh Gosavi.
The students sought full implementation of a govt resolution providing free higher education for girls, the cancellation of a university notification requiring an eight-day prior notice for protests or events, and the resumption of student council elections next year.
They sought stricter measures against teachers who fail to evaluate answer sheets properly, a re-evaluation process conducted by regular faculty, and a commitment to release re-evaluation results within 10 days of a student's request.
Aditya Dumbre, president of ABVP (University chapter), demanded strict action against colleges failing to implement the Free Education for Girls scheme and criticised the university's placement cell, calling for it to actively secure opportunities for students.
Dumbre stressed the need for accountability on erroneous paper-checking. "Many students are forced to apply for re-evaluation due to teachers' negligence and it must be addressed," he said.
University registrar in-charge Jyoti Bhakare said measures will be taken through the Examination Reform Committee and the Examination and Evaluation Board.
On the demand for permanent recruitment for various posts, Bhakare clarified that the university will keep following up with govt. On the contcircular requiring an eight-day prior notice for protests and events, she said that a proposal has been placed before the university's management council for reconsideration.
She added, "Since a writ petition is pending in Bombay high court, the management council has told the administration to submit details before taking a decision."
The university is open to reviewing provisions under the Ordinance related to re-evaluation, and the matter will be forwarded to the authorities. She added that a decision on the formation of the student council as per Maharashtra Public University Act, 2016, will be made in due course.
SPPU will seek information from all affiliated colleges on the implementation of the govt's free education scheme for girls, she added. On Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil earn and learn scheme, Bhakare said that a proposal has been submitted to increase remuneration, working hours and days.
