Hong Kong welcomed 4.74 million visitors in January, a 24% rise from last year, driven by Chinese New Year celebrations and major citywide events.

Hong Kong experienced a remarkable tourism surge in January, welcoming 4.74 million visitors and achieving a 24% year-on-year increase, setting a new post-pandemic monthly record. According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s latest data, released on 14th February, the growth was largely driven by the Chinese New Year festivities and an array of large-scale events held throughout the city.

Mainland China remained the dominant source of visitors, with 3.73 million arrivals—a 25% rise compared to the same period last year. This substantial growth highlights Hong Kong’s continued tourism recovery after the pandemic.

Meanwhile, non-mainland visitors totaled 1.02 million, surpassing the one-million mark for the third month in a row. The short-haul and long-haul travel segments saw annual growth exceeding 20%, with notable increases from key markets such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, and Australia—each witnessing a rise of approximately 30% or more.

Despite the strong year-on-year performance, non-mainland arrivals in January dropped by 12% compared to December 2024, decreasing from 1.15 million to 1.02 million. Short-haul and long-haul arrivals saw declines of over 11%, while visitor numbers from emerging markets contracted by more than 16%.
