There are several region films that have been remade into other languages. Some storylines, same climax and sometimes even the same name. However, the two films here do have the same name but have varied tracks. Apart from the name, both also became superhits. One is a Hollywood film and other is a Bollywood drama. Both had good cast, high octane action sequence and worked in the favour of the actors.
The Hollywood movie features Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, Chris Patt among others. It made major profit and earned around Rs 3000 crores. One of the catalyst in its success was the fierce role of Jolie as the female assassin and her high voltage action scenes. The name of the film is ‘Wanted’ and was released in 2008. The other ‘Wanted’ was a 2009 release that featured Salman Khan, Ayesha Takia, Prakash Jha and others.
Bollwyood’s ‘Wanted’ was directed by Prabhu Deva is a remake of Telugu film ‘Pokiri (2006)’ starring Mahesh Babu and Asin. Prior to this movie, Salman Khan was undergoing a dull phase where his movies weren’t minting the success as expected. However, after a prolonged dry spell, this action-drama revived his career and he gave back to back hits like ‘Bodyguard’, ‘Ready’, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, ‘Dabangg’ etc. From songs to dialogues, it was all loved by the audience. “Ek bar joh maine commitment kar di uske baad toh main khud ki bhi nahi sunta,” is an iconic dialogue that surfaces in memes often.
This Boney Kapoor production furnished the actor with a second innings in the industry. However, it was not an easy ride. In an interview Boney Kapoor once revealed that he was experiencing financial struggles at the time of making of ‘Wanted’. It went to floor in 2006 but faced several delays. During the casting, Salman Khan was not the first choice. Shah Rukh Khan was approached first but refused to fill the shoes of Mahesh Babu keeping his role in high regard. For the heroine, reportedly, Asin was approached to reprise her character but had prior commitment to adhere to.
‘Wanted’ was a jinx broken rebranding the star. On the work front, he was last seen in ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi ki Jaan’ that tanked the box office. Now the audience is looking forward to his upcoming movie ‘Sikandar’.
