The loss of four lives in two separate two-wheeler accidents in the city on a single day has prompted a renewed appeal from the traffic police to motorists to wear helmets as a safety measure.
While a motorist and two pillion riders died after their bike rammed a stationary lorry on the Villianur-Bahour main road on Wednesday, another two-wheeler rider was killed on the spot in a separate accident involving a mini lorry the same day.
Praveen Kumar Tripathi, SSP Traffic, Puducherry, in a press note, said that the lives of these four persons, none of whom donned a helmet, could have been saved had they used the protective gear.
As road accidents might occur any time at any place, and whether the destination was short or long, closer to or further from home, it was advisable for all road users to wear helmets compulsorily while riding or pillion riding two-wheelers, the note said.
Meanwhile, the traffic police stated that during the helmet rule enforcement drive carried out between January 12 and February 12, a total of 10,592 challans were issued and fines to the tune of ₹14.31 lakh collected from violators.
