Jaipur: The same gang that recently robbed ATMs in Delhi, Jaipur's Bassi area, and Sawai Madhopur's Gangapur City, robbed two ATMs in Dausa and Karauli districts within a span of 45 minutes on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, making off with a total of Rs 25 lakh, police sources said.
The first theft took place around 1am in Srimahaveerji town of Karauli district, where the robbers targeted an ICICI Bank ATM located at a govt higher secondary school. They blocked the CCTV cameras before using tools to cut open the machine and steal Rs 9.8 lakh.
Just 45 minutes later, the gang struck again about 30km away, in Khedla Buzurg village under Salempur police station in Dausa district. The thieves smeared black paint on CCTV cameras before uprooting an ATM belonging to Bank of Baroda, which contained Rs 15 lakh. The robbery was discovered only after the bank's Mumbai-based control room detected a malfunction and alerted local police.
Salempur police station in-charge Harendra Singh said shattered glass and tyre marks were found at the scene, suggesting the criminals used a pickup truck. A few hours later, police received information that the stolen ATM had been found abandoned in Todabhim area of Karauli district. The machine had been cut open and emptied.
An FIR was lodged by bank officials, and police have begun analysing CCTV footage from nearby roads.
Sources in police said the thefts were carried out by the same gang that has robbed multiple ATMs in different states. Just days ago, they said, the gang stole Rs 29 lakh from an ATM in Delhi. They also attempted to loot a Bank of India ATM in Jaipur's Bassi area on Feb 10 but failed to extract cash, causing Rs 5.47 lakh to be destroyed in a fire triggered by their gas cutters. On Feb 5, the gang stole Rs 3.95 lakh from an Axis Bank ATM in Gangapur City, Sawai Madhopur. In that incident, some of the robbers disguised themselves in sarees.
A police officer revealed that the same pickup truck was used in all these crimes. "These are professional criminals with prior records of ATM thefts. We have identified them and are working on their arrest," the officer stated.
