Burglars broke into five shops on Nanjikottai Road, Karunanidhi Nagar, here on Wednesday night.
According to the police, the thefts came to light on Thursday morning after a friend of a hardware shopowner rang him up to enquire about why he had opened the shop so early.
Shocked by this, the hardware shopowner rushed to the spot only to find cash missing. Meanwhile, people found the shutters of four other shops in the same area open.
Subsequently, the Tamil University police reached the spot and found that cash had been stolen from all the five shops. The police are analysing the CCTV footages recorded in the area.
