Gandhinagar: Members of the committee formed by the Gujarat govt to assess the need for a uniform civil code (UCC) in the state and draft a bill for the same met at the Gujarat Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday. An official statement said that the committee members discussed the objectives and other important matters related to the proposed UCC law in the state.
Apart from committee chairperson Justice Ranjana Desai, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, other members of the committee, retired IAS officer C L Meena, advocate R C Kodekar, former vice chancellor of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University Dakshesh Thakar, and social worker Gita Shroff were present in the meeting, the statement said.
The statement said that consultations with various stakeholders, evaluation of various existing laws, and setting up an effective law that will safeguard the rights and interests of all sections of society will be taken up by the committee. The committee, which was formed on Feb 4, is expected to submit its report within 45 days.
The statement added that after the report is submitted to the govt, an appropriate decision will be taken.
