The recent decision by Pune’s traffic administration to ban heavy vehicles in designated red zones has drawn criticism from developers and construction material suppliers, who argue that it will increase costs and delay projects.

To ease congestion, authorities introduced a new schedule for heavy vehicle movement, restricting access to accident-prone areas, public spaces, and school zones. While officials emphasize public safety, industry representatives believe the decision is unfairly targeting construction-related transport.

Builders organisation acknowledged safety concerns but questioned why only construction vehicles were being restricted. They warned that delayed material supply could stall projects, violating Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA) deadlines and disrupting the industry. Additionally, transportation of Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) is highly time-sensitive, and restrictions could lead to financial losses.

The District Mining and Crusher Entrepreneurs Association, pointed out that night-time transportation incurs higher costs due to increased wages and additional manpower requirements. They warned that if the issue remains unresolved, construction material suppliers may halt operations indefinitely.

The suggested alternative solutions to vehicle ban are improved traffic management, road widening, and driver education instead of a blanket ban. However, the Traffic department defended the decision, stating that it aims to reduce congestion and enhance public safety. The restrictions allow RMC trucks to operate between 12 AM and 4 AM and dumpers from 11 AM to 5 PM, with trailers permitted along designated routes.

Despite these measures, industry representatives remain concerned about the economic impact of the ban, urging authorities to reconsider the decision.
