Eugene police investigating fatal Highway 99 crash
The Eugene Police Department on Monday said it was investigating the cause of a deadly crash that occurred in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 between Roosevelt Boulevard and Royal Avenue in Eugene on Saturday.
According to Eugene police officials, officers arrived at the scene of a vehicle-pedestrian crash around 7:30 p.m. where they found a man in his 70s with life-threatening injuries. The officers rendered lifesaving measures to the individual, who eventually died at the scene.
An initial investigation by the EPD Major Collision Investigations Unit found that the man was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of Highway 99 when he was struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a man in his 30s.
According to data from the Oregon Department of Transportation, the incident is the third fatal vehicle-pedestrian crash that has occurred on Highway 99 between Roosevelt Boulevard and Royal Avenue within the last year. A 44-year-old woman was killed while crossing the roadway on Aug. 2. A 73-year-old man was killed just a few months later on Oct. 2 after he was struck by a vehicle pulling a trailer.
The incident is also the third vehicle-pedestrian crash reported in Eugene in 2025. In early January, two individuals died after they were struck by vehicles at two separate intersections along West 11th Avenue
During an on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed for several hours and reopened around 1:40 p.m. Sunday.
