At least 300 coconut trees were destroyed over the last three months by wild elephants in Kadamalaikundu forest area in Andipatti Taluk, Theni district, farmers said on Tuesday.
Following a complaint with forest officials, they were assured that trenches would be dug in reserve forest areas, which would prevent the pachyderms from trespassing into the fields.
Speaking to reporters, Balakrishnan, a farmer of Melapatti, said the elephants not only destroyed the trees, but also chased some of the farm workers a week ago in the village. “We are living under constant fear as the wild animals move in a fierce manner.”
The forest officials in Kandamanur range office said they would provide them all support by digging trenches. They appealed to the workers to stay indoors at night and avoid going to the fields alone.
The coconut trees, which were planted about four years ago, were uprooted by the elephants, causing huge losses, Mr Balakrishnan said and added that all efforts in protecting the trees went in vain in a single day.
He appealed to the government to give compensation and also protection from the wild animals.
