The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has sought the intervention of Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan in setting up a Waqf Board in Puducherry.
In a memorandum to the Lt. Governor on Tuesday, AIADMK secretary A. Anbalagan said the board had not been constituted in the Union Territory for the last nine years.
The previous Congress-DMK and the present AINRC-BJP governments have failed to set up the board. The High Court had even directed the present government to constitute a board and appoint a Chairman. However, the government failed to initiate any steps towards establishing one, he said.
The absence of a Waqf board has affected the functioning of some of the mosques and dargahs in the U.T. Poor Muslims have been deprived of benefits in its absence. However, a few people belonging to the community are enjoying all the benefits from the properties owned by the board, he said.
“The Lt. Governor should immediately intervene to constitute the board and allow poor Muslims to get the assistance due to them,” he said.
