Surat: Laskana police on Sunday arrested the main accused in the hit-and-run case in which two brothers were killed on Friday night. Kirtan Dakhra, who was driving the SUV, had been hiding near the railway station.
Dakhra, a third-year BCA student, had attended a party at a farmhouse near Kamrej with three friends, including a woman, before the accident. Police booked him under relevant provisions of BNS.
DCP (Zone I) Alok Kumar said, "We have ordered a medical examination of the accused. His hair and blood samples were collected to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident."
He said while the blood sample may not show the presence of alcohol after a day, the hair retains traces of alcohol for many days. "We will get them checked at the FSL. We are also getting RTO inspection of the SUV done to know the speed and other aspects of the vehicle,'' he said, adding that police will verify Dakhra's driving licence.
He said the passengers in the car had told Dakhra not to drive rashly, but he did not heed to them. "We have recorded their statements in front of a magistrate,'' said the DCP.
Meanwhile, police found no CCTV camera at the Kamrej farmhouse. "We could not find any CCTV camera at the farmhouse. We have called the owner to know why there was no CCTV camera at the farmhouse," said inspector K A Chavda of Laskana police station.
Dakhra was allegedly driving the SUV at a high speed. The SUV jumped over the road divider and hit vehicles coming from the opposite direction on Friday night near Valak Bridge.
Two brothers who were riding a motorcycle succumbed to their injuries on the spot.
