New Delhi: Twenty-five years after the Petronas Twin Towers redefined Kuala Lumpur’s skyline as the world’s tallest buildings, Malaysia’s capital has now become the home to the world’s second tallest building—Merdeka 118. It is important to note Malaysia is continuing to construct new skyscrapers, even as concerns grow over property demand. Merdeka 118 stands 678.9 meters (2,227 feet) tall with 118 floors, overtaking Shanghai Tower in China, which was previously in second place.
With a population of approximately 2 million and numerous vacant offices and homes, concerns are rising over the surge of skyscrapers in Malaysia’s capital. However, construction is expected to persist, fueled by investors prioritizing real estate returns and developers and political leaders aiming to showcase national strength through towering structures.
Merdeka 118 is a sustainable building that has earned LEED Platinum certification for its eco-friendly design and energy efficiency. The project’s total cost is estimated to exceed $1.5 billion.
