Constable dies in accident, gives life to 3 others
Mangaluru: The organs of a constable attached to Kankanady Town police station, who was declared brain dead following an accident, were harvested at AJ Hospital and Research Centre on Monday.
The deceased, Harish GN, 30, hailed from Lakkipura in KR Nagara taluk, Mysuru. He is survived by his parents and brother. Harish served as a police constable since 2016 and previously served at Mangaluru South police station.
According to the hospital spokesperson, Harish travelled to his hometown for his engagement ceremony on Feb 2. The accident occurred in the early hours of Feb 5, while he was returning to Mangaluru on his bike. He met with an accident near Aranthodu in Sullia taluk around 7.45am, sustaining severe head injuries. Due to the remote location, no CCTV footage was available to provide clarity on the incident. He was admitted to a nearby hospital within 15 minutes and later shifted to AJ Hospital for further treatment.
Despite all medical efforts, his condition remained critical, and he was declared brain dead on Sunday evening. Following counselling by doctors, his mother, Renukamma, gave her consent for organ donation.
Through his selfless act, Harish gave a new lease of life to three people. One kidney and his liver were transplanted to patients at AJ Hospital, while his other kidney was donated to KMC Hospital.
