Derabassi SDM inspects Banur Weir desilting site
Mohali: To maintain transparency in the ongoing desilting of Banur Weir, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Derabassi, Amit Gupta, inspected the site on Saturday with drainage and mining officials.
SDM Derabassi said that following the directions of deputy commissioner Aashika Jain the visit aimed to strengthen the existing monitoring mechanism. He said that drainage and mining officials were instructed to conduct a fresh drone survey of the material excavated from Banur Weir bed.The survey is conducted regularly in the presence of the water resources department's vigilance team.
Officials were also directed to provide CCTV monitoring access to the district administration, previously managed by the water resources department's vigilance team. Also, the junior engineer-level officer overseeing the desilting work from 8 am to 6 pm was asked to strictly implement excavation conditions after the day ended.
SDM Gupta said that no excavation would occur after 6:00 pm. The department will ensure that only vehicles loaded with material are allowed to leave at the end of the day, with no further loading permitted.
The desilting site is located upstream of Banur Weir. In recent years, silt deposition has significantly decreased its water storage capacity. During 2023-24 flood season, high water levels in Banur Weir posed a potential risk to nearby villages.
