Min temp may drop to 15°C in Kolkata today: Met
Kolkata: Murcury nosedived in Kolkata on Friday, when both the minimum and maximum temperature slipped significantly.
From 22.2°C on Thursday, the minimum temperature dropped five notches to 17.3°C on Friday. The maximum temperature also slipped to 26.8°C, 1.5 notches below the normal mark from the previous day's 30.2° C.
The Met office predicted a further dip in temperature by Saturday when the minimum temperature may drop to 15°C. The minimum temperature may hover around 15°C even on Sunday, predicted the Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
The last time the city saw the mercury hovering around 15° C was about 10 days ago. Frequent western disturbances over the northwestern region have been disrupting the flow of the cold northwesterly wind, preventing the cold spell from lasting. Unlike the winters of previous years, the minimum temperature shot up above 20 degrees on a number of days.
The city now is getting mainly northwesterly winds instead of the southerly or easterly wind system that injects moisture from the Bay. The minimum relative humidity plunged to 31%, ensuring fast cooling on Friday. The Met office, however, expects the mercury to start shooting up from Tuesday as another western disturbance is likely to pass through the states in the northwesterly region.
