The Civil Supplies-Criminal Investigation Department (CS-CID), which conducts regular patrols to check the smuggling and hoarding of PDS (Public Distribution System) items, registered 11,085 cases last year.
The State government distributes essential commodities through the PDS for the benefit of poor and middle-class families. Some people, however, illegally smuggle these commodities and sell them in the black market to make profit.
Cases have been registered under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 against those involved in such activities. According to CS-CID officials, a total of 11,571 persons were arrested.
Goods worth ₹9.24 crore — 33,980 quintals of rice, 18,898 litres of kerosene, and 1,984 cooking gas cylinders — were seized.
The police said 2,012 vehicles used for smuggling were also impounded.
