Votes polled in the control unit of an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) used in the byelection for the Erode (East) Assembly constituency could not be retrieved. Hence, paper slips with symbols recorded in the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) were counted, and the results were declared during the counting of votes at the Government College of Engineering in Chithode on Saturday.
During the sixth round of counting, the EVM used in booth number 71 malfunctioned, and an attempt to fix the issue by replacing the batteries did not yield results. The issue was communicated to the counting agents of political parties and contestants, who agreed to count the paper slips in the VVPAT for the particular booth. Later, the slips were counted, and the results were declared.
