Thiruvananthapuram: In a bid to reduce plastic waste and its carbon footprint, HLL Lifecare Limited, a central public sector enterprise under the Union ministry of health and family welfare, launched ‘SustainEd' – an initiative designed to integrate advanced, sustainable waste management solutions. The first phase of this initiative was launched at Cotton Hill Girls Higher Secondary School on Thursday.
SustainEd introduces a multi-faceted approach to waste reduction, positioning itself as a model for environmental responsibility. The primary aim of this initiative is to cultivate environmental consciousness and promote eco-friendly habits among the young generation.
A key feature of this initiative is the transition from disposable plastic pens to refillable ink pens. As part of it, ink dispensers were installed on the school campus and 1,500 reusable fountain pens were also provided to the students. This effort aims to eliminate over 2.5 lakh plastic pens annually, significantly reducing the school's carbon footprint and promoting environmental responsibility.
HLL also developed incinerators for the safe disposal of sanitary pads, distributed menstrual cups to students, and organised student engagement activities such as painting, drawing, slogan writing, and essay writing competitions on waste management. Regular awareness programmes focused on sustainable waste management are also part of the facilities offered. HLL has allocated Rs 18 lakh for the implementation of the project at the school.
In addition to the reduction of plastic waste, the project includes several other initiatives like a biogas plant for organic waste treatment, converting kitchen waste into renewable energy, special bins for the effective collection of inorganic waste, and water dispensers ensuring access to clean drinking water.
