A 24-year-old man Naveen Kumar, son of Alagar of Keezha Oorani, near Karaikudi in Sivaganga district, who was on a padayatra to Palani temple, died in a road accident, when a lorry hit him in the early hours of Friday.

The police said that thousands of devotees were on a padayatra from different destinations towards Palani ahead of the Thai Poosam celebrations.

Under such circumstances, along with Naveen Kumar, about 20 people were walking in the early hours near Nochi Odaipatti. A lorry bound for Dindigul hit the devotees. Naveen Kumar, who was one of them, died on the spot. Six persons, including Ajay, 19, Santosh, 20, Viswanathan, 18, and Mani, 32, were injured and admitted in Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital.

Police have been deployed to regulate the movement of vehicles and have been appealing to the padayatris to avoid walking in the early hours as the poor visibility posed danger to them. Sanarpatti police are investigating.
