Aizawl: Amid the regional instability affecting Bangladesh and its potential impact on neighbouring Indian states, Lunglei deputy commissioner Navneet Mann conducted a lunch meeting with the Indo-Bangladesh Joint Boundary Inspection Team at the Circuit House on Thursday.
According to an official release, the joint inspection forms part of the field survey work for 2024-2025, following decisions taken at the 45th Joint Boundary Conference held from Nov 12-14 in Kolkata last year.
The six-member Indian contingent is headed by Pu Uday Shanker Prasad, director of the West Bengal & Sikkim geo-spatial directorate, Survey of India, while the seven-member Bangladeshi delegation is led by Brigadier General Nur-E-Alam Mohammad Sobayer Sarwar, Surveyor General of Bangladesh, as per the statement.
The joint inspection, planned from Feb 4 to 10, will be conducted within Indian territory until Feb 7, followed by inspections in Bangladeshi territory from Feb 7 to 10.
The inspection team will assess field work progress and examine constructed boundary pillars between MP 2359 and MP 2360. They will also validate field work observations from 2019-2020, which remained unverified due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The team will provide directives to survey teams to ensure successful completion of boundary survey field work for 2024-2025.
Tensions persist between BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding fence construction along certain areas of the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal. Additionally, the growing presence of the United League of Arakan (ULA) and its military wing, the Arakan Army (AA), along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border creates uncertainty in western and southern Mizoram.
Former chief minister Zoramthanga voiced concerns about potential Rohingya influx into India through Mizoram, considering the escalating conflict in Myanmar's Rakhine state, warning that terrorist organisations might exploit the large-scale refugee movement for infiltration.
