Man held for ‘sextorting’ lakhs from women posing as cop
Jaipur: Dausa police Tuesday arrested a man for luring women through social media by posing as a police officer, recording obscene videos, and blackmailing them for money. Investigators believe he extorted from over 30 women, including govt employees.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Raman Meena from Batoda in Sawai Madhopur district, was taken into custody after a woman reported that an unknown individual contacted her in March 2024 via calls and messages.
"He posed as a police officer, but he didn't create a fake identity. Instead, he stole photographs of real police officials who resembled him and then falsely claimed to be that officer," said deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Dausa, Ravi Prakash Sharma.
Meena gained the woman's trust and coerced her into a video call, during which he secretly recorded explicit footage. He later threatened to release the video unless she paid Rs 5 lakh. Fearing public embarrassment, the woman transferred the money, but the blackmail continued.
According to police, Meena, who holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, used fake Instagram and Facebook accounts to target multiple women. His primary victims were women between the ages of 25 and 40. He would send them friend requests, engage in conversations about financial struggles, and gradually gain their trust. Once he obtained their WhatsApp numbers, he would send obscene videos to provoke a response.
Police revealed that Meena's extortion demands ranged from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Some victims were forced to sell their jewellery to meet his demands. Many women, fearing social stigma or marital problems, complied with his threats. Investigators estimate that he trapped around 30 to 35 women, extorting lakhs of rupees from victims across Dausa, Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Alwar and Jaipur.
