A 73-year-old farmer died after he was attacked by an Indian gaur at his coffee plantation at Haluvalli in Kalasa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district on Thursday.

Raghupathi Hebbar had been to his farm around 11 a.m. Family members became worried after he neither returned home nor responded to calls and went out to look for him only to find his body.

An Indian gaur was spotted a few metres away from the body. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Police and forest officials visited the spot.

The villagers staged a protest demanding permanent steps to stop the menace of wild animals.

“Two persons suffered injuries in similar incidents recently. The government should take measures to stop such incidents,” said Chandrashekhar, a resident of Haluvalli.
