Ahmedabad: A man from the city's Bapunagar area has been arrested for allegedly poisoning his 10-year-old son with a fatal dose of sodium nitrite.
Police said that 47-year-old Kalpesh Gohel had planned to kill himself after poisoning both his children while his wife was away, and executed the plan on Tuesday. While the chemical had no effect on his 15-year-old daughter, the boy soon started vomiting and was rushed to a nearby hospital by family members, only to be declared dead.
Gohel had fled home after seeing his son's condition deteriorate, but was arrested on Wednesday following a police complaint filed by his brother, Yogesh. A police officer from Bapunagar police station Gohel, his wife and children lived with his parents and that the reason behind the crime is yet to be ascertained.
Giving more details about the case, police said that Gohel and his children had been down with fever over the past couple of days. On Tuesday, after his wife stepped out, Gohel gave them water mixed with ‘medicine', telling them it would help with their nausea, a police official said, quoting the daughter's statement.
While the girl was not affected, the boy started vomiting and turned pale. The accused rushed out of the house leaving behind his mobile phone, the FIR states. Gohel had planned to take his own life but fled on witnessing the deteriorating condition of his son, possibly fearing repercussions, an official said.
The girl called an ambulance and her brother was rushed to a private hospital where he was declared dead, the FIR further states. The girl later told Yogesh that her father had given her and her brother a "medicine" to prevent vomiting, the FIR states and adds that during questioning, Gohel confessed to mixing 30gm of sodium nitrite in the water he gave to his son.
The child's body has been sent for autopsy and further investigations in the case are under way, the official said. Gohel has been booked under Section 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
