Dibrugarh: A 47-year-old daily wager, Kuinda Bhumij, was trampled to death on Thursday morning by wild elephants, near the Nambor-Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary, in Golaghat.
According to locals, Bhumij, a resident of a nearby village, was walking through a forest area when he unexpectedly encountered a reportedly agitated herd of elephants. The 47-year-old, who was on his way to work, attempted to escape, but could do little as the herd charged at him. Despite his best efforts to escape, Bhumij succumbed to their attack.
Forest officials retrieved Bhumij's body, before sending it to Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
While concerned authorities have launched an investigation and are assessing the circumstances leading to the tragic incident, Bhumij's death has once again reignited concerns regarding human-wildlife conflict in the area. Local residents expressed their frustration over the lack of adequate measures to prevent such incidents.
"We live in constant fear of elephant attacks, especially during the early morning and late evening hours. The forest department needs to take stronger steps to ensure our safety," said a villager.
Acknowledging the challenges of man-elephant conflicts, a forest official said, "We are aware of the rising human-elephant conflicts in the area. Efforts are being made to create awareness and implement mitigation measures, but it is a complex issue that requires community involvement and long-term solutions."
