Attack by another tiger is reported to have led to the death of a male and a female tiger, both around a year old, whose carcasses were found on the road in the Kurichiat forests in Wayanad on February 5.
This was revealed in the post-mortem examination of the carcasses conducted on Thursday. A pressnote from the Forest department said that neck injuries were noticed in both the carcasses. The carcass of the female tiger had multiple injuries too. Prima facie, the injuries appeared to be caused by attack by another tiger.
The post-mortem examination found that the male tiger died due to vertebral fracture and severing of the spinal chord. The female tiger died due to skull fracture and brain injury. This indicated an attack by another tiger as bite marks were clearly visible during the post-mortem examination.
Forest officials claimed that attacks on young cubs by adult male tigers were common during the mating season.
Meanwhile, members of the expert committee appointed to investigate the death of the tiger cubs Kurichiat and another tiger found dead at Kuttamunda visited the sites of occurrence and oversaw the post-mortem procedures.
