Northeastern states are growing at 12%, says Scindia
Chennai: Union minister for communications and development of northeastern region Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday said northeastern states's GDP was growing at 12% and invited investors to support the region for better growth.
Speaking at the Chennai road show for the Northeastern Investors Summit to be held in Delhi later this year, Scindia said, "The northeast states have a GDP growth of 12%, which is 1.7 times the average growth of the country. If investors come forward, their businesses will also grow significantly." Speaking about the investments in northeast states, Scindia said in the last 10 years, BJP govt at the Centre invested 5 lakh crore in the region, and it is a 1.2 lakh crore consumption market for businesses to flourish.
Heaping praise on the urban development model in Chennai, the Union minister said he wanted to take the model to northeastern states. "Chennai is a blend of modernity and tradition. When we speak of modernity, Chennai is developed on four fronts such as software, automobiles, infrastructure, and educational institutions. The OMR in Chennai alone contributes 2.5 lakh crore of software exports every year. Similarly, Sriperumbudur contributes to a total of 30% of total automobile exports from India." Speaking about tradition of Chennai, Scindia said, "From Kapaleeswarar Temple to the Margazhi Music Festival, Chennai has a rich tradition. This blend of modernity and tradition should be taken to northeastern states."
On the ongoing developmental projects in northeastern states, Scindia said railway projects worth 81,000 crore are ongoing in the states.
Eight new airports were constructed in the past 10 years, and many states such as Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim got their first airports under BJP govt at the Centre.
