The Coimbatore City Police have mapped crime and law and order hotspots in the city for effective patrolling.

City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar said hotspots for crime and law and order issues had been identified in the jurisdiction of all the police stations.

After assuming office on January 1, Mr. Sundar tasked the station house officers to identify locations in their jurisdictions where instances of crimes and law and order tensions occurred the most.

Based on the mapping, three shifts were created for patrols – A shift: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., B shift: from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and C shift from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.

The Commissioner said the patrol system was revamped to increase visible policing and prevent crimes. Increased presence of police personnel would reduce occurrence of crimes such as robbery, chain snatching, eve teasing and law and order issues, including brawl near liquor outlets, he said.

On January 23, police personnel attached to the Sundarapuram police in Coimbatore foiled a bid to smuggle a sandalwood tree. A patrol team in the C shift prevented smugglers from escaping with logs of a sandalwood tree and arrested one of them. The arrested person and sandalwood pieces were handed over to the Forest Department. The city police also received more than 50 two-wheelers recently to enhance the patrolling.
