Amid rising tensions with the US and Israel, Iran has acquired Sukhoi-35 fighter jets from Russia, sparking concerns among Western nations over Tehran and Moscow’s increasing military ties. Ali Shadmani, Deputy Coordinator of Khatam-al-Anbiya, did not reveal the number of jets purchased or confirm if they had already been delivered. “Whenever necessary, we make military purchases to strengthen our air, ground, and naval forces,” news agency Reuters quoted Ali Shadmani, the deputy Coordinator of the Khatam-ol-Anbia Central Headquarters said.
In November 2023, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported that Tehran had sealed a deal to acquire Russian fighter jets. Later, in January 2025, Iran and Russia signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. While the agreement did not specifically mention arms transfers, it emphasized strengthening “military-technical cooperation” between the two nations. This development has further deepened their alliance amid rising geopolitical tensions.
As Russia’s regional standing has been weakened by the Ukraine war, Iran is facing challenges from Western sanctions, ongoing tensions with Israel in West Asia, and the instability of its regional allies. However, a major turning point came with the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria in early December, which significantly strengthened the alliance between Tehran and Moscow.
