Quick action helps reunite infant with mother; woman kidnapper arrested
Kanpur: A woman from Chamanganj area of the city was arrested while trying to steal a 40-day-old infant from main post office at Bada Chauraha, on Monday. The police efficiently tracked the woman down within three hours using CCTV surveillance under Operation Trinetra and reunited the baby with her mother.
Farah Naz, wife of Mohd Hasan from Budhpur Machharia in Naubasta went to Dufferin Hospital for her daughter Fiza's vaccination. Later, she went to the main post office to update her Aadhaar card. Farah was standing in queue and needed to change Fiza's nappy when a woman offered her help. She engaged Farah in conversation. When Farah was summoned for her photo, the woman offered to take care of the baby. Upon returning, Farah found both the woman and her child missing from the scene. After searching for long she alerted her family and the Kotwali police. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kotwali Ashutosh Kumar and Inspector Jagdish Prasad Pandey organised five teams for the search. The post office's surveillance footage captured the woman's face and her actions. The teams analysed approximately 35 cameras installed under Operation Trinetra, tracking the accused woman's movement from Kotwali towards Parade and Chamanganj. Through local informants, they identified the suspect as Afsana Bano from Chamanganj and recovered the baby from her residence.
During the investigation, Afsana Bano admitted to taking the baby as she wanted to give the child to younger brother ho was childless. Inspector Jagdish Prasad Pandey confirmed that the woman was booked under charges of kidnapping. Further investigations are continuing in the case, he said.
