Mumbai: The BMC, in its 2025-26 budget, revived the proposal to set up the Mumbai Eye, to be modelled on the lines of the London Eye, at a suitable location through a public-private partnership model.
Municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said that they have been talking about the Mumbai Eye project, which will be on the lines of the London Eye, for a long time, but have not been able to zero in on a location that offers an unrestricted panoramic view of the city. "We are trying to explore the possibility of constructing the Mumbai Eye appropriately. It requires three to four acres of land," Gagrani said.
In the past, the state tourism department had worked on the Mumbai Eye project with the same company that built the London Eye, a 135m cantilevered observation wheel perched on the banks of Thames river. Later, the port trust had also proposed the project as part of the development of the Eastern Waterfront, Gagrani said. In 2023, the MMRDA planned to erect a 650ft-tall Mumbai Eye at Bandra Reclamation promenade as a tourist attraction, but scrapped it following opposition from local residents. — Sanjeev Devasia
